Mount Gambier - Hot today - 41C

Our next stop was Mount Gambier but we visited Portland and Nelson.  We all set off - two caravans in convoy and our first stop was Portland.

Tramcar Tourist Ride - Portland

From Portland we travelled on through Nelson towards the South Australian borde where we had a time change of 30mins.

Here we had a cheap nights stay at the local Showgrounds.  There was a horse-riding school going on which was interesting.  The facilities were basic but adequate.  Another couple in a caravan came in park alongside us later in the day.  It is always interesting to compare notes and experiences with fellow caravaners.

We spent the afternoon visiting the local attractions - the first one being The Umpherston Sinkhole Botanical Gardens which was first established in the 1800's.  The garden is in a sink hole which was originally a cave until the limestone roof callapsed.  It was in this hole that James Umpherston first built the gardens and they are very impressive.  The hole is very deep and is accessed by a wooden staircase.  The size and depth of the sinkhole is far bigger than you imagine it would be.  The gardens are beautiful and well maintained.  The whole concept is very impressive.

Next on our list to visit was The Blue Lake which is the bluest lake in Australia.  The photos speak for themselves and I assure you that the colours are authentic.  The lake is very, very blue.  It is the water supply for Mount Gambier.
