Busselton  -  Some warm weather at last!  27C - Sunny and blue skies

Went for a bike ride along the coastal bike path this morning.  It wound in and out of the bush along the coast.

Busselton is a lovely town with a nice feel to it.  It has, of course, a pioneering history with timber being one of the main industry over the years.

Cemeteries are always a source of historical interest.  We found the gravestone below in the Busselton Pioneer Cemetery.

During the morning we drove up to Bunbury to have a look around and find a good caravan park to move to after Bussleton. Bunbury is only 50km north of Bussleton. It was a lovely morning and we spent some time on the lovely beach.

I finally discovered the meaning of all the town names that ended in "up".  I was correct in thinking there was an aboriginal connection.  Apparently "up" means - "place of" - here are some examples...

Balingup             Honor of a native warrior

Boyup Brook      Place of smoke (buyu)

Carbunup            Place of shags (NO! not what you thought - it means cormorants)

Cowaramup        Place of the purple crowned lorikeet (kowara)

Dwellingup        Place of nearby water

Nornalup            Place of Norns (tiger snakes)

Pinjarra              Place of many Jarrah trees/swamp trees struck by lightening

Meelup               Place of the Moon

Yallingup           Place of Love

Yanchep             Place where the rush (yanget) grows

There are many, many more.

Place names ending in -up generally refer to the south west

Place names ending in -in refer to the north
